Are you interested in developing non-toxic corrosion protection (CP) systems for offshore wind farms? 

If so, the Department of Wind Energy, Division of Materials and Components invites applicants for a PhD position in the area of numerical modeling and optimization of offshore wind CP systems to reduce the chemical emission and improve the protection efficiency. 

Job description and responsibilities
The PhD position is part of an EU project, which aims at developing solutions for chemical-free offshore wind farms. The successful applicant will be a member of a larger team of university researchers in Europe including biologists and chemists working together during the project.

The PhD project aims at advancing the state of the art in the area of sustainable design of offshore wind CP systems. The main objective of the project is to develop numerical models for different offshore wind CP systems and use the model to evaluate and optimize CP systems in terms of protection efficiency and chemical emission. Based on the results of the developed models, sustainable designs for offshore CP systems will be suggested.  

Your primary responsibilities and tasks will be to:

  • Develop numerical models to predict chemical emissions from CP systems based on experimental input data from the project partners, such as the amount of anode/coating material dissolution in the marine environment. 
  • Develop models to calculate the corrosion protection efficiency and performance of different CP systems corrosion during their lifetime.
  • Evaluate and optimize CP systems using the developed models in terms of chemical emission and CP efficiency to suggest sustainable designs for CP systems. 
  • Disseminate the results in peer-reviewed conferences and journals.

Qualifications
As a formal qualification, you must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. Furthermore, strong English communication skills are essential. Applicants should be highly motivated, ambitious, and eager to seek and share knowledge, willing and able to work independently and in a team. 

More specifically, you should have the following qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of numerical modeling methods such as finite-element modeling 
  • Good knowledge of corrosion kinetics and corrosion protection systems is an advantage.
  • Experience in finite element software such as COMSOL as well as programming skills in Matlab and Python is a plus. 

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

Starting date is as soon as possible according to mutual agreement.
