Department of Social Sciences and Business, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as PhD fellow of international studies from January 2nd 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as PhD is limited to a period of 3 years.
The Doctoral School
You will be enrolled as a PhD fellow at the Doctoral School of Social Sciences and Business with approximately 40 PhD fellows from all over the world. You will be provided with two dedicated supervisors who will coach you throughout the process.
The Doctoral School of Social Sciences & Business (ISE) provides PhD training and research within an interdisciplinary, international, and professional environment. It is part of a dynamic community of researchers who share a commitment to understanding society in diverse contexts of change and global engagement. Researchers come from all over the world and engage in topics that are geographically, theoretically and methodologically diverse The Doctoral School has one PhD program. The program offers work in progress seminars, thematic professional development seminars, feedback and social activities for the enrolled PhD fellows.
As a PhD fellow you will be associated with the research area international studies, which cover the research groups:

- Globalization and Europeanization Research Group, GERG (https://forskning.ruc.dk/da/organisations/globalisering-og-europ%C3%A6isering)
- Global Political Sociology, GPS (https://forskning.ruc.dk/da/organisations/global-political-sociology)
- International Development Research Group, IDRG (https://forskning.ruc.dk/da/organisations/international-development-research-group)
Members of the four research groups study the international, but differ on geographic focus and disciplinary attachment. IDRG focuses on North-South and South-South relations, while GERG is centred on European and other Western countries. GPS and EPIC focus on both Western and non-Western regions. All four research groups are multi-and cross-disciplinary, yet GPS is strong in political sociology and anthropology, EPIC in economic transformation processes and GERG in political science, and IDRG in geography, anthropology, political science and international political economy. In addition, GPS and GERG engage with legal scholarship and history.
More specifically, EPIC conducts research on contemporary economic dynamics in advanced, emerging, and developing countries, particularly focusing on the relationship between economic policy and institutional change. Key theoretical strands include general economics, post-Keynesian economics, and ecological economics. GERG focuses on regional and global transitions in power, wealth, norms, and security. Scholars have very different methodological stances, including social constructivism, rationalism, institutionalism, and political realism, which are often combined in the group’s research. GPS studies contemporary political and social dynamics across the globe using interdisciplinary approaches and primarily qualitative methods. Its research often involves global phenomena and state–society relations in or across particular countries or regions or transnationally. Finally, IDRG uses an empirically based, multidisciplinary approach to grapple with issues ranging from resource contestations, to global aid flows and neo- and postcolonialism. Emphasizing fieldwork, IDRG draws upon and develops contextual analysis and grounded theorization.

Responsibilities and tasks
As a PhD fellow you are trained at an international level to undertake research, development and teaching assignments. You are responsible for carrying out independent research under supervision and receive constructive feedback in the PhD program in order to finish your PhD thesis. During your employment you are required to take 30 ECTS of course work, gain experience of teaching activities and have a stay at another research environment in Denmark or abroad. Qualifications
You must hold a master’s degree or equivalent within a social science discipline, such as Political Science, International Relations, Economics, Development Studies, Sociology, Anthropology or Area Studies.

You are required to be enterprising and to possess good communication skills and to be a visible, involved participant in the Department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.
Assessment
In the assessment regarding employment, consideration will be given to;

In the assessment regarding enrollment, consideration will also be given to the following criteria:
- Educational skills and any further professional qualifications
- Excellent grades at Master’s programme or equivalent
- Quality and relevance of the project description
- Quality and relevance of the methodical and theoretical choices
- Consistency and coherence between the research problem and the choice of method and theory
- The realistic and feasible scope of the PhD project
- Ability to complete the PhD project
- Relevance of the project to the profile of the Doctoral School

Terms of employment
The employment is on full time, 37 hours per week and you will refer to Dean Peter Kragelund.
The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

After the deadline for applications the Dean will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.
